10 of the Greenest Colleges in the United States
These days, it takes work to stand out among the greenest colleges. In researching this elite group, we found many schools with organic and local produce in the cafeterias, LEED requirements for all new buildings and free passes for public transportation. And while solar arrays and wind turbines are great, many have found that energy efficiency upgrades is where it’s at. So what makes these 10 campuses take top billing among their peers?
Stanford University (CA) (pop: roughly 18,000) recently updated all showerheads and faucets, saving over 120 million gallons of water annually. Currently the university is working to divert 75% of waste from landfills through reuse, recycling and composting, which alone accounts for over 1,300 tons of food and material each year. Stanford also boasts one of the largest zipcar membership programs, with over 1,200 students participating. In cafeterias, which produce over 10,000 gallons of biodiesel fuel each year, 100% of seafood served is listed as sustainable.
