The Republic of Bugs
In the forest, there once were hundreds of bugs who lived
on elephant droppings. One day, a big bug with a big horn
discovered a big dropping from a big elephant. The big bug
was very proud of what he had found, and he quickly called
all of the bugs in the forests to a meeting. "Friends, I have a
vision,” he said. “We are going to build a country for the bugs,
of the bugs, and by the bugs. This is going to be a brave new
world!" All the bugs cheered in agreement. Then they set about
turning the elephant droppings they had collected into a new
country. They crawled and crawled and dug and dug. After much
hard work, they had built houses, streets, parks, a shopping mall,
and a most majestic presidential hall.
The bugs were all very pleased and happy with what they had built.
Then the big bug called another meeting. This time he said, "We have
to elect a president to organize a government so we can live happily
together." Again, all the bugs cheered and were amazed at the big bug’s
vision. A little while later, the election was held, and the big bug was
easily elected as the first president of the Republic of Bugs.
It was a beautiful day as all the bugs gathered for the big bug’s
inauguration. But just as the big bug was being presented with the
presidential seal, there came a deep, thumping sound from far in the
distance. The sound came closer and closer and got louder and louder.
All of the bugs turned to see where the sound was coming from.
Suddenly, a big elephant lumbered into view. It was walking right
toward them! The big bug yelled to the elephant, "Hey you! Do you
know what you are doing? Don’t you understand we are having our
inauguration ceremony for the first president of the Republic of Bugs?"
The elephant was ashamed that he hadn’t known what was going on,
and he felt badly that he had disrupted the ceremony. So, he decided
to kneel down on his knees to apologize. As he was kneeling, he was
so clumsy that he lost control of his big feet. One of his knees just
happened to fall on the droppings. Most of the bugs escaped just in
time, but the houses, the streets, the parks, the shopping mall, and the
most majestic presidential hall were all squashed and smashed as flat
as an omelet.
